Ethereum Proposal EIP-7781: Ether Slot Time Reduction Could Increase Transaction Throughput by 33%
The blockchain slot time is proposed to be decreased from 12 seconds to 8 seconds in a new Ethereum proposal called EIP-7781. When new blocks are proposed on the Ethereum network, it’s known as slot time. In order to increase the overall efficiency of the network, this interval could be shortened to produce more blocks more frequently. Researchers Ben Adams and colleagues said in the proposal that the goal is to increase transaction throughput by roughly 33% while reducing latency for rollups, or Layer 2 scaling solutions that take advantage of the Ethereum mainnet‘s sequencing capabilities.
Ethereum Proposal Aims to Shorten Slot Time While Keeping Gas Limit and Blob Capacity Constant
The gas limit per block may be raised from 30 million to 40 million, or the blob capacity could be increased from 6 to 8 using this way. However, the proposal states that it will accomplish these goals without increasing peak bandwidth demands that put further strain on available resources.
If the proposal is approved, the gas limit per block or blob capacity will not be raised. Instead, the slot time would be shortened. The greatest data transfer rate required at any one time, or peak bandwidth, would not rise because each block’s size stays constant. In keeping with Ethereum’s ongoing attempts to increase network scalability, the proposal is currently undergoing preliminary evaluation and debate.
