Worldcoin Fined for Failing to Protect Personal Data

Worldcoin and its development company, Tools For Humanity, have been fined 1.1 billion Korean won ($830,000) by South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission for Worldcoin’s purported infractions in gathering and sending personal data. The PIPC claims that the Worldcoin Foundation failed to adequately inform the participants of the reason for collecting and the duration of ownership of their scanned iris data. The PIPC stated that, as of March 22, the initiative had not supplied a Korean translation of its consent form for biometric data.

A fine of 725 million won ($545,000) was imposed on the Worldcoin Foundation for managing confidential data improperly and sending it outside. In addition, the regulators announced that TFH had been fined 379 million won ($285,133) for violating their agreement regarding data transfer abroad. Moreover, it was revealed that until April of this year, TFH had not adequately age-verified any signees under the age of 14, and the foundation did not offer a mechanism for people to seek the deletion of their iris data.

Worldcoin Pledges Compliance After the Fine in South Korea Over Data Issues

The PIPC clarified, though, that as long as Worldcoin fixes the problems, it does not prohibit the gathering of sensitive data in South Korea. TFH stated in a news release today that it welcomes the decision made by South Korean regulators, notwithstanding the fine. The company concluded that the PIPC’s decision today was to conclude the nation’s inspection of Worldcoin and that the project’s iris-scanning orb to confirm humanness complies with regulations.
