Crypto News – Telegram and Bigo Live Face Potential Ban in Indonesia Amid Illicit Content Claims

Crypto News – Local news sources indicate that Indonesia, a major global user of Telegram, is contemplating a ban on the popular messaging platform due to its inadequate moderation of illegal content. Budi Arie Setiadi, Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Informatics, revealed on August 29 that authorities are considering blocking Telegram, as reported by the Jakarta Globe.

Concerns Over Illicit Content and Platform Moderation

Minister Setiadi expressed concerns about Telegram’s role in distributing illegal content, including alleged promotion of online gambling and pornography. The Indonesian government is reportedly troubled by the platform’s failure to address these issues effectively.

Alongside Telegram, local authorities are also evaluating a potential ban on Bigo Live, a live-streaming app owned by Singapore-based Bigo Technology. Similar allegations against Bigo Live have prompted this consideration.

Telegram and Bigo Live’s Response to Moderation Requests

According to reports, both Telegram and Bigo Live had promised to enhance their content moderation practices in response to Indonesian government requests. Despite these assurances, the platforms have reportedly failed to implement sufficient moderation measures or resolve the issues.

Minister Setiadi stated that he personally prefers to “shut down” both Telegram and Bigo Live, but emphasized that thorough studies are necessary before any definitive action is taken. He warned that further evidence of illicit content distribution could lead to the platforms’ bans, saying:

“We act based on evidence collected by our team. If we find evidence of pornography or gambling promotion, we will proceed with blocking the platforms.”

Impact on Telegram’s User Base in Indonesia

If Indonesia proceeds with a ban on Telegram, the platform would face a significant loss of users. Indonesia ranks as the third-largest country globally in terms of Telegram usage, with over 27 million app downloads reported from the country.

As of July 2024, Telegram boasts more than 950 million monthly active users worldwide. India leads with over 100 million users, followed by Russia with 34 million users. The potential ban comes amid additional scrutiny faced by Telegram’s founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, who is currently under judicial supervision in France following a court appearance related to alleged criminal offenses connected to his role at Telegram.
