Crypto News– Ethereum developers are gearing up for Wednesday’s highly anticipated Dencun upgrade, which is poised to introduce the most significant code changes to the blockchain in over a year. Dencun, a blend of the project names Deneb and Cancun, encompasses two simultaneous upgrades on Ethereum’s consensus and execution layers.

Technically classified as a “hard fork” in blockchain terminology, the upgrade is slated to commence around 13:55 UTC (9:55 a.m. ET). It aims to inaugurate a new era of reduced fees for the expanding array of auxiliary networks operating atop Ethereum, known as layer-2 (L2) “rollups.” These changes will coincide with the activation of a new Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) dubbed “proto-danksharding,” or EIP-4844, which seeks to enhance the chain’s capacity to handle data from L2 networks.

While elements of the Dencun upgrade have been in the works for several years, developers postponed its original target of late 2023 due to certain engineering concerns. Since then, the package has undergone testing across three separate test networks (testnets), with most tests progressing smoothly. Although the first test on Goerli encountered a delay before finalization, subsequent patches swiftly resolved the issue, ensuring smooth operation.

In anticipation of Dencun’s official launch, some Ethereum enthusiasts are organizing watch parties. Notable communities such as EthStaker and leading Ethereum infrastructure team Nethermind are each hosting livestreams to mark the occasion.

Barnabas Busa, a DevOps engineer at the Ethereum Foundation, emphasized the importance of ensuring all client and bootnodes are fully updated and prepared for the fork. He noted that their monitoring infrastructure has been scaled up to mitigate the risk of overlooking any critical aspects during the transition.
