Binance Users Seek Unconventional Methods to Serve Cristiano Ronaldo in Class-Action Lawsuit

Crypto News – In a surprising turn of events, Binance users who have initiated a class-action lawsuit against renowned soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo have embarked on an unconventional path to serve legal notice. They have filed a motion, dated January 16, 2024, seeking to reach the elusive athlete through alternative communication channels, including X, formerly known as Twitter.

The rationale behind this motion is the apparent difficulty in employing traditional methods to serve Ronaldo. The proposal put forth by the plaintiffs involves utilizing email, the X platform, and website publication as means of notification. They argue that these methods comply with international agreements and effectively notify the defendant.

The motion underscores the challenge of ascertaining Ronaldo’s current address, particularly given his presence in Saudi Arabia. The claim is made that the Hague Conventions do not explicitly prohibit such alternative service methods, especially when the individual’s whereabouts remain unknown.

According to the motion, the plaintiffs have taken the initiative to establish a dedicated website for housing all case-related materials. These materials will not only be forwarded to Cristiano Ronaldo’s verified Twitter accounts but also to the email addresses of his domestic counsel, who are actively involved in ongoing litigation within the United States federal system.

The class-action lawsuit stems from allegations that Binance clients incurred financial losses due to Cristiano Ronaldo’s endorsement and promotion of the cryptocurrency exchange. Filed on November 27, 2023, in a Florida district court, the suit asserts that Ronaldo “promoted, assisted in, and/or actively participated in the offer and sale of unregistered securities in coordination with Binance.”

The lawsuit references guidance from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which cautions celebrities about the necessity of disclosing payments received for endorsing cryptocurrencies. The complaint alleges that Ronaldo failed to adhere to this guidance. It is worth noting that Binance and Cristiano Ronaldo had entered into a multiyear partnership in mid-2022, announcing the launch of a series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), with at least three of the soccer star’s collections intricately tied to the Binance platform.
