Notorious Uranium Finance Hack Address Moves $3.1 Million to Ethereum, Laundering $1.89 Million via Tornado Cash
Crypto News – The infamous address associated with the Uranium Finance hack in 2021 has been detected in another financial operation, transferring $3.1 million from BNB Chain to Ethereum (ETH).
The main address linked to the Uranium Finance hack in April 2021 has once again initiated a transfer, moving $3.1 million in BUSD from BNB Chain to Ethereum and funneling $1.89 million through Tornado Cash for obfuscation.
Prominent blockchain security firm, Peck Shield, was the first to highlight this recent development. The disclosure from Peck Shield occurred when the exploiter moved a modest $10,000 worth of BUSD to the Ethereum network using Stargate, a cross-chain bridging protocol.
Following the alert from Peck Shield, the exploiter proceeded to transfer more BUSD tokens to Ethereum. The movement comprised six separate transactions bridging 500,000 BUSD and one transaction bridging 100,000 BUSD, totaling 3.1 million BUSD.
These recent transactions, all transpiring within an hour today, have sparked speculation among cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Post-transfer, the exploiter’s address on the BNB Chain now holds a portfolio exceeding $15 million in BUSD and Wrapped BNB (WBNB).
Precisely, the address currently encompasses $10.29 million worth of BUSD and 22,185 WBNB valued at $4.73 million. Furthermore, at the time of reporting, their Ethereum address showcases 824 Ether (ETH) worth $1.3 million, $12,980 worth of USDC, and $12,487 worth of USDT.
Intriguingly, shortly after transferring the 3.1 million BUSD to the Ethereum network, the hacker moved 1,200 ETH (equivalent to $1.89 million) to the crypto mixing service Tornado Cash. This transfer consisted of 12 transactions, each involving 100 ETH, carried out between 7:32 AM and 8:09 AM (UTC) today.
Past transactions reveal a consistent pattern. This recent flow of funds comes 61 days after the address utilized Tornado Cash to launder 1,100 ETH in August. Notably, the exploiter had previously moved 530 ETH to Tornado Cash in July, 670 ETH in June, and 650 ETH in May.
These transactions have maintained a similar pattern throughout this year. Notably, the initial batch of transfers occurred in March, where the exploiter utilized a different address to transfer 2,250 ETH (worth $3.35 million at that time) to Tornado Cash.
This initial round of transactions took place almost two years after Uranium Finance suffered the notorious hack. It’s essential to recall that during the April 2021 hack, the exploiter drained $50 million worth of crypto assets from the Uranium Finance protocol by exploiting a vulnerability in the Uranium Finance pair contracts.
