Skincare and Fragrance Fuel Ulta’s Q1 Revenue Beat

Due to persistent margin challenges, Ulta Beauty’s Q1 2025 performance was robust, exceeding analyst forecasts in terms of revenue but falling just short of profitability. Strong success across key categories, including skincare and fragrance, and high consumer demand drove the company’s reported net sales of $2.81 billion, a 9.7% rise year over year. Despite macroeconomic challenges, comparable store sales increased by 6.2%, indicating strong in-store activity.

Higher Costs Shrink Ulta’s Margins, But Full-Year Guidance Holds Firm

However, mostly as a result of increased promotional activities and growing operating expenses, the gross margin shrank from 40.0% to 38.3% in the previous year. The main causes of the margin decrease, according to executives, were rising supply chain costs and inflationary pressures. The company reiterated its full-year guidance in spite of these challenges, stating that it is confident in its strategic investments, loyalty program, and brand power.
