Tokenized Treasuries Surge: Spark Allocates To Real-World Asset Tokens

A significant investment move has been revealed by Spark, an on-chain capital allocator integrated into the freshly rebranded Sky ecosystem (previously MakerDAO). The platform claims to have invested an extra $1 billion in tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), particularly those backed by Treasury securities issued by the United States.

DeFi Power Move: Spark Surges to $2.4B TVL with Major RWA Investments

According to DeFiLlama statistics, Spark is now the top on-chain allocator with an expansion that raises its total value locked (TVL) to $2.4 billion. The distribution comes after Spark’s “Tokenization Grand Prix,” a months-long event that gave money to three RWA protocols:

  • Centrifuge-Anemoy’s JTRSY
  • Superstate’s USTB
  • BlackRock/Securitize’s BUIDL

The expanded capital base comes at a time of growing institutional and retail momentum in onchain finance, particularly across Asia Pacific and emerging markets,

Major DeFi protocols are actively adopting tokenized RWAs as primary reserves, mainly short-term U.S. Treasuries, as the most recent allocation makes more evident. The goal of these protocols is to lessen exposure to the volatility of crypto-natives and stabilize yields.

Spark Allocates $1 Billion to Top RWA Protocols, Boosting DeFi Ecosystem

$500 million went to BUIDL, $300 million to USTB, and $200 million to JTRSY as part of the first $1 billion allocation, which was approved after a Sky governance vote on April 3. The recipients of the new money are the same people who received the $1 billion Tokenization Grand Prix from Spark.

Spark’s Tokenization Grand Prix Draws 39 RWA Submissions for DeFi Treasury

In July 2024, asset issuers were invited to submit RWA products for Spark’s stablecoin-backed treasury through the Tokenization Grand Prix. Steakhouse Financial, a company that is part of the Spark ecosystem and has experience underwriting RWA standards, evaluated 39 submissions.

Evaluations centered on pricing clarity, liquidity, and compatibility with Spark’s objective of incorporating yield-producing, low-volatility assets into DeFi. The Spark Liquidity Layer (SLL), which contains stablecoins like USDC, USDS, sUSDS, USDe, and sUSDe, was used to onboard the assets.
