Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has issued a critical warning regarding quantum computing and the technologies of the future. Buterin emphasized that we are entering a pivotal era and stressed that Ethereum must be prepared to remain resilient.
According to Buterin, Ethereum will face a significant test as technology and artificial intelligence continue to advance. Calling for urgent action to secure the network’s future, the co-founder argued that preparations against the threat of future quantum computers must begin immediately.
In a post shared on Sunday, Buterin stated that Ethereum’s base layer must pass what he calls the “walkaway test.” This concept refers to the network’s ability to remain secure and stable for decades, even in the absence of developer intervention or protocol upgrades.
Ethereum Must Be Ready!
The crypto world is currently bracing for quantum computing, seen as one of the greatest future threats. Developers for both Bitcoin and Ethereum are focusing on enhancements to ensure the long-term security of blockchains. Vitalik Buterin, however, pushed back against the idea of de-prioritizing security, stating:
“We should resist the trap of saying, ‘Let’s delay quantum resistance until the last possible moment in the name of eking out more efficiencies for a while longer.’ Being able to say ‘Ethereum’s protocol, as it stands today, is cryptographically safe for a hundred years’ is something we should strive to get to as soon as possible, and insist on as a point of pride.”
While many experts believe quantum computers will not impact cryptocurrencies for at least another decade, prominent figures like Buterin maintain that security measures must be implemented without delay.
