After the company’s impressive first quarter 2025 results, which greatly exceeded analysts’ EPS and EBITDA projections, Lyft’s shares surged 27.4% in the afternoon session. There was an 11% increase in riders and a 16% increase in rides, both of which established new records.

Lyft’s Wild Ride: How Market Sentiment Shifted on Q1 Results?

The company’s ability to fund expansion and return capital is demonstrated by Lyft’s almost $1 billion in trailing twelve-month cash flow, which is supported by a recently extended $750 million share buyback plan. The revenue, however, fell short by a small margin.

Over the past year, Lyft’s shares have had 25 swings of more than 5%, making them extremely volatile. However, such large-scale actions are uncommon, even for Lyft, and suggest that the market’s opinion of the company was greatly affected by this news. Due to growth in Canada, increased demand during the back-to-school season, and the launch of new products like Price Lock, Lyft saw a 9% rise in active riders and a 6% increase in ride frequency. In order to increase income, Lyft intended to grow its company in Canada, increase engagement through alliances with DoorDash and autonomous car manufacturers, and develop its advertising division, Lyft Media.

Turning to the bottom line, Lyft achieved efficiency well ahead of its annual multiyear target of 10% by cutting its per-ride incentive expenses by 17% year over year. Reductions in insurance costs also helped profitability ratios.
