CZ– Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao has confirmed that he has formally requested a presidential pardon from Donald Trump—weeks after initially denying such intentions.

Speaking on the May 6 episode of the Farokh Radio podcast, Zhao revealed, “I got lawyers applying,” adding that the move came after Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal reported in March that he was seeking a pardon. At the time, Zhao denied the claims but later admitted, “If they’re writing this article, I may as well just officially apply.”

Zhao also pointed to Trump’s previous pardons of BitMEX co-founders, including Arthur Hayes, as motivation for submitting his own application.

The request was reportedly filed about two weeks ago, though Zhao acknowledged that a pardon wouldn’t erase his criminal record. “No felon would mind a pardon,” he said, emphasizing that he is, to his knowledge, the only person in U.S. history to serve prison time solely for violating the Bank Secrecy Act.

Background: Zhao’s Legal Troubles and Sentencing

Zhao pleaded guilty to money laundering violations in November 2023 as part of a sweeping $4.3 billion settlement with U.S. regulators. His personal contribution amounted to $50 million, and he agreed to step down as Binance CEO. He was sentenced to four months in prison and barred from holding an executive position at Binance.

CZ Has No Plans to Return as CEO

Although still a shareholder, Zhao said during Binance Blockchain Week that he has “no plans to return to the CEO position,” citing confidence in the current leadership. Since his release, he has taken advisory roles in countries like Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan, focusing on blockchain regulation and infrastructure.
